Choosing A Companion

Finding the right friend for you.
The decision to open your heart and life to a dog should be well thought out and not entered into lightly.

There are many different types of dogs-some fuzzy, some short haired, some with no hair at all. There are large hounds, medium mutts, small pooches, and a few are literally tiny enough to fit in a teacup. Dogs have been breed for many purposes ranging from working with humans as shepards and hunters to those created simply for love. They possess all types of personalities from lazy and passive to highly energetic. You need to decide what type of companion will fit into your lifestyle.

Puppy or geriatric or someone inbetween?
Age is an important consideration, both your age and the age of a prospective companion. All types are available from eight weeks old puppies to elderly dogs. Young puppies are adorable and irresistable but are also lots of extra work. Older dogs usually require less supervision on your part. There are no guarentees on longevity. Do not let age enter into your decision when considering how long this companion may be with you.

Where do I find a dog?
You can purchase a dog from a reputable breeder (yes, there is one love that money can buy!), or contact your local shelter or rescue group. How you reach this part of your decision is up to you. Be careful not to buy or adopt a dog simply because it is cute or because you feel for sorry it. It may be a good idea to contact your local dog clubs to gain information about the basic personalities of particular breeds. Truely consider whether or not this dog will fit into your schedule, your lifestyle. Don't forget to consider how the new dog may interact with children and other pets. Evaluate whether or not this particular individual will fit into the household or family.

Commitment!
Remember as you consider this new addition to your family, this is a "for life" arrangement. In this time of throw-away cutlery, disposable pens and single use cameras, we see and care for so many animals who have been tossed away, unwanted. Dogs are not disposable. They are living, thinking, feeling beings who will love and respect you if treated with the same consideration. The relationship between you and your dog can be a wonderful thing. There is nothing that can match the companionship, friendship and love you and your dog, or dogs, can share.
